PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The CANON Laser Beam Printer is a state of the art printer
that can make ordinary computer printing look like typeset work.
Unfortunately, most software is not designed to take advantage
of all of the features of this new technology. This is where
CanSet fits in.
CanSet is a menu-driven utility that allows you to take
advantage of the many features of the Laser Beam Printer. It
makes it easy to set the number of copies, set the margin,
choose the fonts and styles.
CanSet is not designed to replace your word-processor.
CanSet is designed to set up the printer so that output from
spreadsheets and report generators can look as good as your word
processing.
The CanSet package consists of two programs: CanSet and
CanSetB. These two programs use the same commands to accomplish
the same purpose. The difference between the two programs is
that CanSet uses menus and CanSetB does not. CanSetB is used
either as an "expert" version or for inclusion in .BAT files.

STARTING THE PROGRAM
At the DOS prompt, type the program name. This may be
followed by options that allow you to select monochrome mode,
the starting menu and where to direct the output.
The output can be directed to any PC/MS-DOS device. For
example, to the printer (PRN:) or a diskfile.
Any options specified must be included on the same line as
the program name and must be separated by one or more spaces.
A> CanSet /b /ofilename {/d /i /f /m}
/b
Use Monochrome Mode
/ofilename
Select an alternate output device or file. The
default is PRN:. This is useful for storing a
specific sequence of commands to a disk file for
copying to the printer at a later time or for
inclusion in text files.
/d
Invoke the program with the DIABLO Menu as the primary
menu. This is the default mode.
/i
Invoke the program with the ISO Menu as the primary
menu.
/f
Invoke the program with the FONT Selection Menu as the
primary menu.
/m
Invoke the program with the FONT MACRO Menu as
the primary menu.

OPTION FUNCTION
* Print Font Test. Print sample of the entire font set.
# Print Line Test. Prints a line test pattern of
100 lines of 200 characters each.
ESC Will Exit the program and close the output file.
=
Will Exit the program without closing the output file.
This should only be used when operating within a
network environment. By not closing the output file
will allow the data that follows from the next
application to be sent to the printer as part of the
same stream.

Using CanSetB
CanSetB allows you to communicate with the LaserBeam Printer
without having to go through the various menus. Simply enter
the program name at the DOS prompt followed by the commands that
you wish the program to execute.
The commands that are entered are the same as those used within
CanSet, the menu version of the program.
The command line option of /ofilename from CanSet is also
available in CanSetB. If used, this option must be specified
first and must be separated from the following commands by a
space.
The following examples show the ease of use:
A> CanSetB s a5 b75
($) shift to Diablo Menu - program default
s resets the printer
a5 sets the left margin to 5
b75 sets the right margin to 75
A> CanSetB /osetup.str & s a5 b75 v1 * t
/osetup.str write the output to a diskfile
named "setup.str"
& shift to ISO Mode
s reset the printer
a5 set the left margin to 5
b75 set the right margin to 75
v1 set to manual feed
* print a font test
t send a form feed
A> CanSetB @ a4 & a5 b100 v0 * t
@ shift to font macro mode
a4 select the 15 pitch font from the built in font
set
& shift to ISO Mode
a5 set left margin to 5
b100 set the right margin to 100
v0 shift to automatic paper feed
* print a font test
t send a form feed
CanSet Page 11
In every example, spaces are ignored when intermingled with the
commands. Spaces do help readability when used within batch
files. The only exception is the /ofilename option: it must be
separated by a space. This will keep the commands from being
interpreted as part of the file name.
CanSetB, as well as CanSet, is not case sensitive: commands may
be entered in either upper or lower case with the same results.
The following examples are functionally equivalent:
A> CanSetB /osetup.str @ a4 &a5 * t
A> CanSetB /osetup.str @a4&a5*t
A> CanSetB /osetup.str @A4 &a5*T
Since the CanSetB program does not have menus, each command is
interpreted and an appropriate message is displayed on the
screen. This allows verification of the commands sent to the
LaserBeam Printer. Because this may not always be desired (for
example, when included in a BATch file), the CanSetB program
supports two additional commands that are not needed in CanSet,
the - and +.
- (minus)
This command suppresses the display of confirmation
messages.
+ (plus)
This command re-activates the display of the
confirmation messages. This is the default option.
These commands (- and +) may be inserted anywhere in the command
line between the individual commands. If they are inserted
within an individual command, i.e., V-1, unpredictable results
will occur. The following are valid examples of the use of the
message switch commands:
A> CanSetB -sa5b75 Suppresses all messages
A> CanSetB -s+a5b75 Suppresses only the Printer Reset
message
A> CanSetB s-a5b75 Suppresses all except the Printer
Reset message.
A> CanSetB /oc:setup.str -sa5b75
writes the output to a disk file on
drive C: named "setup.str" and
suppresses all messages.
